Watch on YouTube

RMB cash is the national legal tender and the most basic and fundamental means of payment. The unit of RMB is yuan, and the subsidiary units are jiao and fen. 1 yuan is equal to 10 jiao, and 1 jiao is equal to 10 fen. The RMB symbol is the pinyin initials Y of “yuan” plus two horizontal lines, that is, “¥”. The People’s Bank of China is responsible for the design, printing and issuance of RMB.

As of 2021, five sets of RMB have been issued. A multi-variety and multi-series currency system has been formed, including paper money and metal coins, ordinary commemorative coins and precious metal commemorative coins. Except for the three coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents, the first, second and third sets of RMB have been withdrawn from circulation, and the fourth set of RMB has ceased circulation since May 1, 2018 (except for 1 jiao and 5 jiao banknotes and 5 jiao and 1 yuan coins). The RMB in circulation is mainly the fifth set of RMB issued in 1999, 2005, 2015, 2019 and 2020. The act of refusing to accept cash not only undermines the legal tender status of RMB, but also deprives consumers of the right to choose payment.

Issuance History

RMB is issued by the People’s Bank of China. Except for the three coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents, the first, second and third sets of RMB have been withdrawn from circulation, and the fourth set of RMB will be withdrawn from circulation on May 1, 2018. The RMB in circulation on the market is the fifth set of RMB; the circulating banknotes are: 1 jiao, 5 jiao, 1 yuan, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 20 yuan, 50 yuan, 100 yuan; the coins are 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 1 jiao, 5 jiao and 1 yuan.

In 1950, commissioned by President Nan Hanchen, Mr. Ma Wenwei inscribed “People’s Bank of China” and other words for RMB.

Among the five sets of RMB displayed in the China Money Museum, unlike the last four sets, the six characters “People’s Bank of China” and the Chinese denominations on the first set (except the 1953 edition of the 5,000-yuan Weihe Bridge pattern note) are arranged from right to left. When Chairman Mao Zedong reviewed the banknotes in 1952, he proposed that the arrangement of the bank names of RMB should be from left to right. Therefore, since 1953, the arrangement of “People’s Bank of China” on RMB has been changed to from left to right.
